As shared earlier on the blog, we are highlighting the local Nevis artists and shop owners who display their crafts at our Thursday Beach BBQ. Previous posts have introduced Marvin and his stone art and Millie and her calabash gourd gifts.
This week, we would like to introduce you to Deborah Tyrell. Deborah is the owner of Island Living located in the Cane Garden Estate in St. John’s Parish.
She hand sews wall hangings and gifts using a mixture of fabrics and techniques. Deborah learned to sew from her mother, who would make clothing for the family. At age 13, she began sewing with patterns and putting pieces together to make her own quilts.
While she continued to sew for herself, her family and home into adulthood, she didn’t begin her art until the late 1980s. It began with appliqué work using recycled and new fabrics in patterns created by her freehand drawings. She has since expanded her craft to incorporate collages and other textile techniques.
Deborah loves the quiet, high quality of life that Nevis has to offer. When she’s not sewing, she’s out enjoying our beautiful beaches and historic hot baths.
On your next visit to Nisbet Plantation, we invite you to stop by to meet Deborah and view her crafts at our Thursday night Beach BBQ.
