As many past guests know, one of the highlights of a vacation at Nisbet Plantation is our weekly Beach BBQ on Thursday. The evening begins with a Manager’s Rum Punch Party and local Craft Vendor Marketplace, where guests can speak to four Nevis shop owners and have the opportunity to purchase unique souvenirs and gifts.

For the next month, we’ll spotlight a different vendor each week so that you can learn more about the person and their crafts. This week, we’re introducing you to Mildred Williams.

Millie, as she goes by, is the owner of Caribco Gifts in Charlestown on Nevis. She moved to Nevis from Bermuda with her husband Lloyd, who is a hydroponic gardener and talented musician, and loves the abundance of natural resources found on the island.

Guests can find a variety of locally made crafts in her store and at her booth at the Beach BBQ. One of the most unique items she displays are the crafts created with the calabash gourd, which is grown on Nevis.

These crafts are created specifically for her store by a self-taught local crafter who has been making the items for 18 years.

To create the crafts, the calabash gourd is picked while it is still green and then dried. When it is cut open, it initially emits a foul odor. But, after the scent fades away, the gourd is transformed and carved into beautiful vases, bowls, planters, bird feeders, masks, wind chimes and more.

Visit with Millie at the weekly Beach BBQ where you can find the calabash gourd gifts as well as other Nevisian made crafts. You may also spot her crafts in our Treasure’s Boutique.
